Gabriel Lynch, an African-American adolescent in the years after the Civil War, goes with his mother and stepfather to homestead in Kansas. Tired of the hard work this entails, Gabriel takes off, traveling to Texas with a violent man named Marshall Hogg who promises him a job as a cowboy.
