Description
London: A & C Black, 1907. Although the title page states this copy was published in 1907, and even the copyright page agrees, this does not have a gilt title on front nor has it top edge gilt. It is thus a 1913 or 1917 reprint. A & C Black obfuscated a lot like this, but if you must have a first edition, make sure of the gilt. Inman 24 in the 20 SH series and still a popular resource for historical costumes and hair styles. Nice plun copy with mustard, green and blue costumes and decorations on front and spine. The tissue guards are browning, but there is no foxing. Clean and tight, and informative color plates. An handsome bargain. . Later Printing. Decorative Cloth. Very Good. Illus. by 70 Calthrop Water Colors & Line Drawings. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
top edge gilt : The top of the text block (the edges the pages that are visible when looking directly down at the top of a closed book) has been decorated with a gold-like finish.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
reprint : Any printing of a book which follows the original edition. By definition, a reprint is not a first edition.
tight : Used to mean that the binding of a book has not been overly loosened by frequent use.
gilt : Decorative patterns imbedded into the affected portion of a book. Often appears on the boards or the spine, and may be very simple, to elegant, to ludicrous.
title page : A page where the title of the book, the author's name and publication information usually appear.
plates : Full page illustrations or photographs. Plates are printed separately from the text of the book, and bound in at production. I.e., they are not sewn as parts of gatherings.
8vo : Short for Octavo, A book whose page size is approximately 8-10 inches tall. The size is based on a sheet of paper 25 inches by 38 inches, the size of paper traditionally used by book printers, which has been folded and cut into 16 pages..
Unfortunately often misunderstood to mean 8 volumes.
Cloth : Generally refers to a hardcover with cloth covering the outside of the book covers.
