London: Chapman and Hall, 1865. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. A Near Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original red cloth with the front board lettered in gilt and the spine decorated with a gilt band at each end, housed in a red folding chemise and red half-leather box. The book contains 8 Trollope Essays on hunting, each of which first appeared in the Pall Mall Gazette. An unkempt, unsuccessful, and unhappy lad, Trollope gained employment at the Post Office as a clerk. In 1841, when he was 26 and in his seventh year of low-level clerk work , Trollope was transferred to Ireland where he could freely try his hand at fox hunting, the sport which became one of his greatest passions, and where he first began writing literature. Thus, in a very real way, these Essays reflect part of Trollope's evolution from a relatively useless lad, ridiculed by schoolmates and instructors alike, to a happy and highly-successful Novelist. This copy belonged to the noted Trollope collector Reverend Yardley and carries his bookplate to the front pastedown. The book shows the common darkening to the spine, but much less than usually seen, a touch of general handling soil to the boards and remarkably less wear than we usually see on this title. The book was part of a series of three books of Sketches, the others being Travelling Sketches (1866) and Clergymen of the Church of England -- originally planned to be titled "Clerical Sketches" (1866), and is quite easily the nicest copy of any of the Sketches books that we have seen in over 30 years. A Near Fine copy.

Urbana, Illinois: Accent: A Quarterly of New Literature, 1946. Printed wrappers, 6 x 9 inches, 64 pp. Light bump to corner, else fine.. A fine copy of this rare literary magazine containing Flannery O'Connor's (1925-1964) first published short story "The Geranium." O'Connor was a prolific American short story writer, novelist, and essayist, and is counted among the greatest American fiction writers of the twentieth century and a master of the Southern Gothic style. Indeed, O'Connor's fiction is noteworthy for its unsentimental realism and emphasis on the grotesque and sinister aspects of life in the South, often emphasizing themes such as poverty, violence, race, and alienation. She would describe herself in a 1955 letter as a "hillbilly Thomist" in response to those who would see in the… Read More

St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
