Christian Egenolffe, Franckfort am Meyn: 1564 Second German edition. Collation: [C2; C5-C6; D2-D5; E1-F1; F3-F4; G1; G3-G6; H3-H4; J2-K2; K5-M5; N1-O1; O3-Dd6; Ee2-Hh4] "W" and "I" were not used in the signatures. L6 has an error of pagination as "LXII" instead of "LXVI." back flyleaf missing. The trimmed folia are numbered on one side only, the recto. Of all the leaves in this copy only 6 are without illustrations. All 934 illustrations in this copy are hand-colored, of these 23 are narrative images. Some of these large narrative images are by Jost Amman.The book is bound in-6, measuring 28cm X 17.5cm X 5.5cm. This copy was rebound from its original binding in the eighteenth century into vellum, and this binding was repaired (a super added) sometime later, probably in the nineteenth century. The binding is quite scratched but still a tight functioning binding. The top of the spine is cracked but not chipped (about 4cm from the top.) This copy has all the signs of a much used book, with occasional sixteenth century marginalia in ink, and a later sketch of a man on signature Y1.This book was printed on heavy laid paper, and the illustrated title page has been repaired. There are occasional old repairs to the upper gutter, dating from the earlier rebinding most likely. Despite its centuries of continuous use and its lack of completeness, this is still a beautiful and useful hand-colored copy of one of the most important herbal texts in the history of medicine and pharmacology.
