Book summary

A squad of young American soldiers encounters a similar outfit of young German soldiers on Christmas night near the end of the Second World War. On this particular cold night, far from their respective homes, neither group is inclined to kill or be killed, and between them they begin to discuss plans for the Germans to surrender with dignity. When comradery and reason seem to be carrying the day, fate and tragedy soon step in.
