115 pages. 9 x 6. Over 100 b/w photographs of significant art masterpieces from the Berlin museums discovered in the salt mines of Merkers by allied forces at the end of WW II. Said to represent the cream of the world's great collections of old masterpieces. This group of paintings was brought to the USA for safekeeping on the Army trnsport JAMES PARKER in December 1945, and deposited by the Dept. of the Army in the vaults of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Because of the age and fragility of these paintings they could not be subjected to further travel and were returned to Germany in 1948; the remainder were made available under the supervision of the Army, for exhibition in a certain number of American museums in the principal regions of the country.
