Book Description
This is the second edition of the 1992 book with the same title. The author relies especially on Alexander Schmemann, Aidan Kavanagh, and Robert Taft. The aim of this book is to gain some clarity in understanding the term "liturgical theology." Fagerberg proposes two defining attributes of this theology: (1) It is theologia prima. (2) It is found in the structure of the rite, in its lex orandi. In other words, the liturgical community itself does genuine theology; the law of prayer establishes the Church's law of belief.
"Those searching for the deeper meaning of the liturgy will be well served by this excellent book...Fagerberg's consistent theme is that in 'doing liturgy' in fact the 'Liturgy does us' as it shapes and molds our worldview and our experience of God...This book will make you stop and think--repeatedly and continuously--about why Liturgy is the 'summit and source' of the Church's very life." --Father Kevin W. Irwin.
"Fagerberg draws widely on Eastern and Western sources, both ancient and modern, to demonstrate that liturgy is theologia prima, the locus where Christians come to meet and to know God, where they are grafted onto the Tree of Life. Christians of all traditions will discover themselves with this book." --Paul Meyendorff.
