Raised bands, gilt decoration on the bands, and fresh gilt title on the spine. Pages xxiv,349 with index. In fine condition, with no prior owner marks inside, and pages and plates clean and tight. Handsewn endbands. This was an important scientific work on glaciers, the author a Scottish physicist (1809-1868). The second half of the book compares glaciers in Switzerland, and includes his ascent (the first British) of Jungfrau in 1841.
