Description
London: J. Allen, 1826. A beautiful copy of this history of Lambeth, in an exquisite leather binding. Blue marbled paper-covered boards, spine & corners bound in sumptuous deep blue leather, with raised bands & gilt titles & decorations to the spine. 458 pages, plus 27 pages of maps & engravings at the rear, a few of which are colored. Additionally, there is a b/w engraved frontispiece, plus other full-page illustrations, including maps - plus some in the text; a few of these are also neatly colored. There is also a fold-out map of part of Lambeth & Westminster, dated 1825, showing "the proposed site of the intended new bridge". The exterior is in fine condition, the gilt being crisp & bright. Binding is very sound. The interior is clean; there is occasional toning or foxing, notably on pages 400 to 442, where a lesser quality paper must have been used, but most pages are clean & unmarked, both as to text & plates. Folding map is sound & clean; there is some old tape neatly reinforcing some of the folds. Small bookseller's label to front endpaper. Further details, if desired, on request. A very nice copy. . Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Octavo.
boards : Common term for the covers of a hardbound book.
jacket : Sometimes used as another term for dust jacket, a protective and often decorative wrapper, usually made of paper which wraps around the binding of a book
octavo : A book whose page size is approximately 12 inches by 9 inches. The size is based on a sheet of paper 25 inches by 38 inches, the size of paper traditionally used by book printers, which has been cut into eight pages.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
raised band(s) : On leather bound books, the ridges that protrude slightly from the spine.
gilt : Decorative patterns imbedded into the affected portion of a book. Often appears on the boards or the spine, and may be very simple, to elegant, to ludicrous.
frontispiece : A portrait or illustration on the page opposing the title page.
plates : Full page illustrations or photographs. Plates are printed separately from the text of the book, and bound in at production. I.e., they are not sewn as parts of gatherings.
endpaper : The double leaves bound into a book at the front and rear after printing. One side is glued to the inner portion of the boards (the paste-down) and the other is left loose (free endpaper).
crisp : A term often used to indicate a book's new-like condition. Indicates that the hinges are not loosened. A book described as crisp will not have 'well-read' pages, i.e., where the book will naturally open to certain pages or sections.
