Description
New York: Simon & Schuster. F/NF. 1966. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. Author's most scarce book (his 2nd), which has not been reprinted by author's request. Signed by the author on a loosely laid-in bookplate. Fine, straight, clean book--straight, tight and no handwriting in it, bound in red cloth with gilt spine printing and red upper page edges. The dustjacket is price intact, has no chips or tears, and is bright, clean and crisp, but has a couple of small, hardly noticeable spots lower edge near spine where small surface rubs have been recolored (black area, black ink), the spine is darkened about one shade, and there's just a trace of shelf-rubbing to edges and folds. This author's only venture into writing sci-fi. Very handsome! ; Signed by Author .
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
tight : Used to mean that the binding of a book has not been overly loosened by frequent use.
gilt : Decorative patterns imbedded into the affected portion of a book. Often appears on the boards or the spine, and may be very simple, to elegant, to ludicrous.
bookplate : A device (often decorative) affixed to the book, usually on the endpapers, which designates ownership (or former ownership).
crisp : A term often used to indicate a book's new-like condition. Indicates that the hinges are not loosened. A book described as crisp will not have 'well-read' pages, i.e., where the book will naturally open to certain pages or sections.
laid-in : something which is included with, but not attached to the book, such as a sheet of paper.
Cloth : Generally refers to a hardcover with cloth covering the outside of the book covers.
