Full pg. frontis copper plate portrait & biography rmvd. from "The Historic Gallery Of Portraits And Paintings, With Brief Memoirs Of The Most Celebrated Men, Of Every Age And Country, Embellished By Engravings In Outline, Of The Finest Specimens Of The Arts, Ancient And Modern." Plate & text pages measure 8 1/4 x 10 5/8 in. incl. wide margins. The engrd. image measures 2 3/8 x 3 7/8 in. From a very rare large paper quarto copy with the plates & text pages approx. twice the size of the more common octavo edition. "Historic Gallery" was a set originally publ. in 36 parts, 1807-1810. It was a biographical encyclopedia of historic personages & events, illustrated with copper plate portraits in outline form & reproductions of famous paintings in outline form followed by a biography or description. The engravings were the work of London engraver George Cooke, son of William Cooke. The Cooke engravers learned their craft from engraver William Angus. Engraved portrait of Madame De Maintenon plus detailed attached 8pp. text biography by unnamed writer. Madame De Maintenon or Frances D'Aubigne, was born in 1635, waited on Madame de Montespan, mistress to King Louis XIV, eventually married King Louis in 1685 & entered a problematical marriage with the king. in having to submit completely to his will. A copper engraving & text 200 years old. Sold with photocopy of dated title page of the volume this came from.
