Natural History of Birds, Fish, Insects, and Reptiles. 5 volumes

by Comte de Buffon

  • Used
  • poor
  • Hardcover
London : H D Symonds, 1798 Complete 5 volume set with 44 black and white plates - with 2 images or small pictures per plate. Classed as 'poor' because the full calf bindings are in poor condition: spines largely absent; boards detached or detaching with some blank leaves attached. The stitching holding the book blocks is sound so they could be repaired reasonably easily. The contents are good, being clean on high quality watermarked paper. With bookplate of 'James' (with heraldic lion and motto 'Nil Conscire Sibi') on the front pastedowns of each volume. Vol I, 13 plates, 332pp; Vol II, 8 plates, 332pp; Vol III, 9 plates, 320pp; Vol IV, 8 plates, 322pp; Vol V, 6 plates, 386pp. There are plate listings in Vols I and II, but these are for a different issue of Buffon. The main plate listing is at the rear of Vol V and all the plates are present as per this listing. There is an ink line on p 211 of Vol I, and the first plate of Vol IV is bound in upside down. Some page sections have a pale brown tint to the paper - and there is occasional offsetting from the plates to the opposing page and occasional spotting on the plates. There is a very occasional nick to the margin of a page. It looks as if the boards are slightly larger than the book was intended to be because the markers between pages to indicate where they should be cut is visible on many of them - suggesting that the pages should have been trimmed further.

Description:
London : James Cundee, 1806 A good copy of this scarce 6 volume work bound in 3 volumes. With 58 (of 60) hand coloured plates and 6 hand coloured vignette title pages. An account of natural history based around observation and reading mixed with anecdotes and tales relating to the animal in question. The illustrator (anonymous) has then produced some extraordinary illustrations including an orang utan at the dining table, a flock of herons attacking rooks, a boxing kangaroo, and a man riding an ostrich, and a sneaking crocodile. Rev Smith refers to himself as an 'editor' rather than an author - but there are no clues as to contributors. Originally planned in 4 volumes, Vol 5 and 6 (covering fish, amphibians, insects and other invertebrates) were added in 1807. Each volume has a frontispiece, a hand coloured vignette title page, and a plain title page. According to the directions to the binder at the end of Vol 6, there should be 60 plates - this copy is lacking a frontispiece of a turkey and… Read More

Description:
London : Harrison and Co , 1785 A rare and beautiful introduction to natural history. In 2 folio volumes with 99 (of 100) hand coloured plates by Moses Harris and others after his style. Martyn is a pseudonym for William Fordyce Mavor, who authored a wide range of works. The books are set out alphabetically, with the plates reflecting this classification, so they can portray lizards and lynx side by side on the same plate. The pages are double column and unpaginated. The text for each animal is thoughtfully put together eg for the guinea pig 'The Guinea-Pig is a very cleanly creature and totally different from that that affords it a name....Guinea-Pigs repose on their bellies, pretty much in their usual posture...'. The plates are nicely coloured and the ones by Moses Harris (butterflies, moths and shells) are particularly well drawn. This copy is in a contemporary half leather binding with marbled boards. The half leather corners have been replaced with a paper cover. There is some wear to… Read More

Originally owned by Nottingham City Public Library - there is a library stamp to the front endpaper and small oval stamps to the title page and each page of plates (usually at the bottom and not over the plate itself). Description:
London: Printed for the Proprietor, 1797-1808.. 16 Volumes. 8vo (actually a small 4to.), the volumes measure just under 5 x 8 inches. 19th century tree-calf, spines designed in gilt, lettered in gilt on panels of black. A few slightly cracked hinges and modest shelf wear, a very nice clean set. This is a uniform binding of two separate sets; the first set, of ten volumes, has the legend "Barr's Buffon" at the head of the title page. The second set, of six volumes, is issued anonymously. In all, 136 plates, most coloured by hand. Internally very fresh, almost no foxing to be seen. Typically, the plates are not in the exact order given in the individual volumes. In this case, the final (supplement) volume contains several plates which are listed in earlier volumes, but not present there. One plate from Volume 11 (a Parrot?) appears never to have been bound-in. In all a clean and attractive set of Buffon, quite handsome.

Description:
London: T. Curtis, 1804. Very good +. This is a hand colored copper plate engraving. The print measures 5.5 x 9.25 inches, with a plate mark of 4.5 x 7.75. It is a beautiful decorative antique print expertly colored and beautifully composed. This particular plate has been trimmed at the rough edge. Curtis' work was the first study of British flora, and artists contributing to the opus included James Sowerby, Sydenham Teak Edwards, Francis Sansom and William Kilburn. "The Botanical Magazine; or Flower-Garden Displayed, is an illustrated publication which began in 1787. The longest running botanical magazine, it is widely referred to by the subsequent name Curtis's Botanical Magazine. Each of the issues contains a description, in formal yet accessible language, and is renowned for featuring the work of two centuries of botanical illustrators. Many plants received their first publication on the pages, and the description given was enhanced by the keenly detailed illustrations. The first issue, in… Read More
