Book Description
Ankara, Turkey: Türk Tarih Kurumu Basimevi, 1950 Rare. 83 pp. 36 pages of plates, illustrations, maps (1 folded), bibliography. Dual text in German and Turkish (no other excavation reports in this series were published). This "preliminary report" summarizes the findings of the first three excavation seasons (1947-1948) under the leadership of the German philologist and archaeologist, Helmuth T. Bossert, at Karatepe, a late Hittite (8th century B.C.) fortress in south-central Anatolia. These exavations yielded the famous bilingual inscriptions in Phoenician script and Hittite/Luwian hieroglyphics which greatly assisted philologists in understanding the Hittite hieroglyphic script and language. The plates provide photographic views of the excavation work, sculptural reliefs, and the inscriptions; site plans; and transcriptions of the Phoenician and Hittite texts. CONTENTS: Einleitung. Zur Architektur der Stadtmauer und Bauten von Karatepe. Grabungen am Nordabhang, auf dem Gipfel und am Seitentor. Die Bildwerke vom Karatepe. Die Inschriften vom Karatepe. Domuztepe. CONDITION: Moderate browning and overall wear to paper-covered boards (with cloth spine). Cracked internally, but binding is firm. OVERSIZED.. First Edition. Hardcover.
