A scholar and official, Ramírez (1805-1871) served in several regional and national governmental positions in Mexico during the 1830-1860s. This record presents a first-hand view of Mexico during the 1840s during the period of conservative-liberal struggles, and provides valuable background information for relations between Mexico and the United States just prior to and during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848).
