This is a translation of José Fernando Ramírez's memoir "México durante su guerra con los Estados Unidos," composed approximately 1847. A scholar and official, Ramírez (1805-1871) served in several regional and national governmental positions in Mexico during the 1830-1860s. This record presents a first-hand view of Mexico during the 1840s during the period of conservative-liberal struggles, and provides valuable background information for relations between Mexico and the United States just prior to and during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). CONTENTS: 1) The fall of Herrera. 2) The revolution and government of Paredes. 3) Santa Anna assumes power. 4) Civil war in Mexico City. 5) The Mexican War draws to a close.
