Book desription: Cambridge, MA: American School of Prehistoric Research, Peabody Museum of Harvard University, 1948 xliv, 252 pp. + plates. Maps, plates, illustrations, notes, bibliography. Prefatory material contains a memorial for George Grant MacCurdy (with complete list of publications) and short obituaries of Addison L. Green, Charles Peabody, Vladimir J. Fewkes, and Hugo Obermaier, as well as a short memorial for the author of this monograph, James H. Gaul (1911-1945), whose brief career ended tragically in a Nazi concentration camp. Published posthumously, this is one of the earliest detailed archaeological monographs on the Neolithic cultures of Bulgaria. The list of topics discussed includes the "West Bulgarian Painted" culture (in Sofia and Struma basins as well as more generally in north and south Bulgaria), later Neolithic sites (Sofia and Struma basins), the Boian-A-Marica culture (Rumania and Bulgaria), the Bulgarian Mound culture (with an extensive list of detailed site descriptions), sites in North Bulgarian caves, the Vadastra culture (with evidence for the Aryan invasion of Greece), anthropometric data, and a brief discussion of the early Bronze Age in Bulgaria. CONDITION: Light darkening to pages and card covers due to age (somewhat darker on spine due to exposure). Former owner's last name stamped on front cover and written on first leaf. Abbreviated title of monograph written neatly by hand at top of spine. Light soiling to edges of book block from shelving. Minor creasing of paper down middle of spine. Sewn binding. Overall, in excellent condition considering age and acidic paper.. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. 15 x 23 cm.
