Portfolio style covers with collection of full size individual illustrated plates. Not dated, c. 1900, could be earlier. Covers measure approx. 33 x 25cm. String tie at right side. Stiff cover boards, mauve coloured with paste down on front. Contains 54 plates, 6 in colour, illustrating reproductions of the painted wallpapers of Dufour and Leroy, dating from the early 19th century, and varying from the fashionable, historical and mythological subjects to Captain Cook's voyages and the Monuments of Paris. Most of the plates are individual and printed one per page. There are a few that are printed landscape style, two to a double width page (top and bottom) and these are properly folded directly in half as published. There are none that have been folded incorrectly at any time. Also includes 12 pages of text, front end-page, title page, and list of illustrations, all in French. Plates in English and French. Plates meausure approx. 32 x 24.5cm. Good condition: The covers show light soiling, mostly around the edges. Spine is split especially to rear hinge, this does not extent to the backstrip. Minor edgewear. The tie string is well intact and still strong. The front end-page and title page are bent at upper right corner, but not broken. The interior pages show only a very slight darkening around extreme perimeter, probably due to age, with two plates showing a bit of dusty soiling and minor edgewear to 0.5cm top margin, appears stored not quite flush with portfolio cover. The illustrations are overall very clean, bright and fresh with only the very edge with the slight darkening as stated above. There are no bends, folds or tears. There is no foxing. This extremely rare portofolio is a remarkable collection of highly recoginized wallpaper examples designed by the famous Dufour & Leroy wallpaper manufacturers in France. This item represents the most impressive and highly regarded wallpaper examples to date. Some of these original wallpapers are properly and proudly displayed at the Wallpaper Museum in France. This item represents an outstanding array of a number of subjects, the most famous being the voyages of Captain Cook. Effectively it shows the whole wallpaper panorama of each set, a close up of one or two panels and then a close up in colour of a scene. For 'The Monuments of Paris" and "Travels of Captain Cook" this is most attractive.. Good.
