1st

Minimal edge wear, lovely book. A contemporarily bound copy of the first edition. Lamouroux was a noted botanist who developed his own system or morphology. He was especially interested in such asymmetrical forms as those exhibited by coral and other marine plants. "By studying a great number of exotic algae brought back by scientific expeditions to the tropical seas and especially the Pacific Ocean, Lamouroux was able to describe many new species. In particular he furnished one of the first descriptions of the algae of Australia.... Moreover, Lamouroux was the first to be concerned with the geographic distribution of marine algae,.... (D. S. B.) The plates comprise more than 100 different illustrations of the marvellous, crystalline forms of corals and are all after drawings by the author. In the long introduction, the author discusses at length all the earlier writers on the genus. In the course of this he refers in passing to South Seas exploration. His topic is the family worldwide, so he describes Atlantic as well as Pacific, Northern as well as Southern species. Most of the text is a full presentation of the orders and genera. Their native regions are noted, and those coming from Australia and the South Seas are of course numerous. Of the 624 entries, 129 refer directly to Australia, or the 'Austral' sea, including many relating specifically to the Tasmanian coast. . 1st. VG.
