Lacking single leaf to front, possibly eng. t.p. Lesson prepared this book hurriedly after returning from his circumnavigation of the world with Duperrey, 1825-27. The book was produced in this small, brief and unillustrated style with the intention of selling to the general public rather than to his colleagues and the scientific community. He argued that such a small volume would also be better suited to future voyages as a source of reference rather than the bulky and larger volumes normally produced for such material. On the verso of the title, it is printed that an atlas with 80 plates will be published as a companion volume for this one; it was never produced. Rare. With this manual Lesson had the goal to become the "vade mecum" of the officers responsible for the health of the royal navy. . Good.
