Book description: Paris: c. 1830. Lithograph. 19 1/4 x 14 inches. 27 1/2 x 21 3/4 inches. Exquisite lithographic portrait of Napoleon after David. The Consecration of the Emperor Napoleon and the Coronation of Empress Josephine (December 2, 1804) was one of two immense paintings made by Jacques-Louis David in his role as official court painter to the Emperor. This print is, as it were, a quote from that painting, singling out Napoleon, who is raising a crown heavenward. In the painting, he is about to crown his wife Josephine, but here he appears to be about to crown himself. Napoleon appears much affected by the importance of the occasion. He holds the crown in a dignified and graceful way. As always with David, the whole figure is extremely well drawn and has been beautifully transferred to lithograph. This print bears two owner marks: one A. Bridge, an English editor, and the other, a bumblebee signifying William J. Latta of Philadelphia, a 19th century collector of Napoleonic material. Lugt, Collection des Estampes.
