London: Printed for the Agricultural Society of Herefordshire, 1811. Hand-coloured aquatint by William Hooker. Very good condition apart from some minor foxing and two small areas of slight discolouration in the corners of the left margin where there are two pieces of tape on verso. Trimmed virtually to plate mark on all sides. 11 1/2 x 8 3/8 inches. 12 1/8 x 9 1/2 inches. A highly attractive colour plate by one of the most celebrated pomological illustrators, from Knight's important work 'Pomona Herefordiensis'. Thomas Andrew Knight, brother of Richard Payne Knight and president of the Horticultural Society from 1811 to 1838, devoted most of his life to the study of agriculture and horticulture, improving various kinds of fruit from seed produced by hybridisation and careful selection, instead of the traditional methods of grafting. His work is celebrated for its realism, the plates including "scabby fruit... and wooly aphid-clad twigs" (Janson). Cf. Dunthorne 168; cf. Great Flower Books, p.108; cf. Nissen BBI 1072; cf. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 3761.
