A fine copy of this lively view of the winner's enclosure for the 1886 Victoria Derby held at Flemington racecourse, Melbourne, Australia The Victoria Derby has been held at the Flemington course in November every year since 1855. The first race was won by Rose of May. The present scene, painted by Austrian-born artist Carl Kahler, shows Trident, the winner of the 1886 race, in the winner's enclosure surrounded by many of the most prominent citizens of Melbourne and the Australian racing world. Trident foaled in Australia in 1883, by Robinson Crusoe (an Australian stallion), from Coconut (an imported mare from Great Britain). Trident went on to win six major races in 1886 (including the Australian Derby) and a further eight in 1887. Kahler went on to spend some time in San Francisco (some reference works suggest that he died there during the earthquake of 1906, but the most recent information is that he was still alive and living in New York in 1926.
