A LIST OF THE ABSENTEES OF IRELAND, AND THE YEARLY VALUE OF THEIR ESTATES AND INCOMES SPENT ABROAD. WITH OBSERVATIONS ON THE PRESENT STATE AND CONDITION OF THAT KINGDOM by [Prior, Thomas]:
Dublin: Printed for R. Gunne, 1745.. [8],94pp. plus terminal blank. Octavo (signed in 4s). Modern wrapper, with printed label. Several old stamps of a defunct mercantile library, light soiling early and late, a couple of small professional repairs to title, but a very good copy. Third edition, with additions, of an important work by Berkeley's friend, the philanthropist and founder of the Dublin Society. It was first published in 1729, and "formed the basis of many subsequent works on Ireland. It is plain there is something wrong with the calculations, but the evils of absenteeism impressed everyone who lived in Ireland or investigated its economic difficulties" - Wagner. The suggestion has been made that Swift had a hand in its original composition (see Rothschild). It was reprinted, often in revised form, a number of times, including a London edition of 1730 conjoining it with Swift's A MODEST PROPOSAL. WAGNER 209. ROTHSCHILD 1694 (1730 London edition). BRADSHAW 326. ESTC T77742.
