LAST WINTER IN THE UNITED STATES BEING TABLE TALK COLLECTED DURING A TOUR THROUGH THE LATE SOUTHERN CONFEDERATION, THE FAR WEST, THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS, &c by Zincke, F. Barham:
London. 1868.. xvi,314pp. plus 6pp. of ads. Original cloth. Moderate edge wear and soiling, bit frayed at head and toe of spine, armorial bookplate. Internally very good. Zincke was a Jamaica-born antiquary, chaplain to Queen Victoria, and inveterate traveller. He travelled 8000 miles in the United States in 1867 and 1868. "...Zincke went to Richmond and across the South by way of North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi to New Orleans. His observations on the region are detailed and of genuine value. His comments extend to the land, economy, conditions of families, and local social customs. Zincke saw the problem of the former slave in rather clear perspective...This book is more rewarding than most postwar British travel accounts" - Clark. "Especially valuable for its picture of the South in 1867; the author reporting that he found the Cotton States in particular almost ruined by the war and the effects of Reconstruction" - Nevins. CLARK I:245. HOWES Z15. GRAFF 4800.
