Book Description
Viking, NY, 1968. First edition, without the glassine wrapper, but with two articles about the conductor laid in, one signed "Lenny Bernstein" in red ink and the other amusingly annotated in pen by Stefan Lorant, whose book this was. The signed article is from LIFE; the annotated one is from Berkshire Magazine, and Lorant makes the general comment that it is a "stupid article full of glaring errors." One such error, highlighted with an exclamation mark in the margin, is the writer's sentence, "It all began i n the spring of 1940 while much of Europe was bracing for an inevitable war." Lorant notes in the margin, "the war started in Sept. 1939." Another anecdote in the article describes Bernstein and some friends dining at the Apple Tree Inn: "they we re all quite obnoxious and complained about everything." Lorant, who was apparently there that night, comments in the margin that "the food & service was ghastly." Book is in VG+ condition, but the LIFE article has suffered some dampstaining.
