Book Description
Jewett & Co., Boston, 1855. This title by Stowe was published a few months after Uncle Tom's Cabin appeared in 1852, and likewise bears the imprint of John P. Jewett, the abolitionist publisher. Printed green wrappers, 16 pp., stitched binding, all edges gilt, measuring 4.25" x 3." The cover shows date of 1855; title page shows 1854. BAL notes that the plates of a second edition were used for Jewett printings dated 1854 to 1858; by 1860 they had become the property of the American Tract Society of Boston, who used them for numerous undated printings over the next decades. This copy would thus appear to be an early printing of the second edition brought out by Jewett. The tract is in surprisingly good shape for being so small and fragile; covers are an attractive shade of light green, with an area of darker green at upper right corner; pages clean with occasional light foxing; generally VG. Scarce with this publisher's imprint.
