Book Description
Zweitausendeins, Frankfurt Am Main, 1979. The uncorrected German proofs of Lorant's last opus, which presents the history of Hitler's Third Reich from its beginnings in Bismarck's reign. Lorant wrote the German text as well as the English, and was also responsible for the layout of the photographs which do so much to tell the story. The proof sheets have been bound in black cloth with the title stamped in gold on the spine and cover. The title page has a handwritten notation by Lorant: "Uncorrected German proofs--corrected proofs were returned to Germany Oct 1, 1979. S.L." Laid in are a few loose sheets, consisting of the beginning of the book up to page 15, and the end of the text starting from page 337. Some of these sheets have corrections in Lorant's hand. This writer was certainly qualified to write the history of Hitler's Germany, as he was living in Berlin at the time; Hitler saw him as a danger and he was imprisoned, but was later smuggled out of Germany. His book remains one of the best on the subject, as the events are shown unfolding page by page, and the factors leading to the rise of the Reich are shown in clear, logical order. Boards very lightly scraped on bottom edge, else near fine.
