Wright & Potter, Boston, 1896. First printing in two volumes. Quartos, 647 & 805 pp. Bound in navy blue cloth with gilt lettering on spines. Higginson was the leader of the first black regiment in the Civil War, and later became an able historian. Volume I presents a survey of the war from the outbreak to the return of the flags, followed by condensed history of the regiments and lists of soldiers who were killed in the war. Volume II lists naval officers, general officers, field officers, line officers, medical officers, etc. Multiple indexes in both volumes. The set derives from a library but there are no exterior markings except for a trace of sticker removal, and no interior markings save for bookplate on front endpaper and evidence of pocket removal at the back of Vol. 1. Very handsome set. VG+ (mild discoloration to bottom corner of Vol. 2).
