Book Description
Charles Scribner's Sons, NY, 1895. First U.S. edition of a scarce title by the great historian. The book is based on lectures delivered at Oxford the two years before. This copy bears the ownership label of Thomas Wentworth Higginson, known for having led the first black regiment in the Civil War, less well-known as being the Military and Naval Historian for Massachusetts, but making for an interesting connection here. Octavo, very good plus in brown cloth-covered boards with stamped gilt design on cover, top edge gilt. Corners of front endpapers have tape residue.
