Book Description

N/A. Original typescript of Saunders's novel. 203 pages typed on 11 x 14 paper, in a four-ring binder. Several pages seem to be carbon copies, but the others are all original typed sheets. On the title page is typed "Single Lady by John Monk Saunders," with the title and author underlined. Below that is a handwritten epigraph: "From ghosties and ghoulies and things that go bump in the night..... dear Lord, deliver us!" (This line appears on p. 91 of the transcript where it is alluded to as "a bit from Cornish Litany.") The handwriting is not Saunders's and in fact appears to be a female hand. Published in 1931, the story features a group of WWI fighter pilots who wander Europe drinking and trying to forget the war, in the tradition of Hemingway's Lost Generation. The book was unusual in being a multi-media phenomenon the year it was published. It was immediately made into a movie called "The Last Flight," and in the same year it was made into a Broadway musical called "Nikki," after the central female character. (The musical starred a young British actor named Archie Leach, who was so taken by the name of the character he played, Cary Lockwood, that he changed his name to Cary Grant.) The typescript is contained in a heavy binder covered with gray cloth and with metal hinges; remnants of a paper label are still visible on the spine showing parts of the words "Single" and "Lady." A few scorations are visible on the back cover; spine somewhat spotted. Pages are in very nice condition with no tears or stains.
