Book desription: Delisser & Proctor, NY, 1859. First U.S. printing. While Goethe's longer works, such as Faust, had been translated for English-speaking audiences, his shorter poems had generally not been translated before this volume appeared. The translators contribute a preface which explains their selection and the method of collaboration. Of special interest is their inclusion of the poet's ballads. Octavo, 240 pp. bound in brown cloth with blind-stamped boards and gilt lettering on spine. Quite attractive with minor flaws--rubbing along spine, worn corners, light stain to back cover, mild foxing. Binding tight, hinges sound. Owner name written on title page and on front & back endpaper.
