Black Sun, Washington D.C., 1945. First printing. Issued in two parts, the first originally as a broadside in Black Sun's Portfolio I, the second as a broadside in Portfolio III. The two parts are offered here together as a set. Part I is a 16" x 12" broadside printed front and back. Part II is a 32" x 12" sheet folded to make 4 sides; the first side is a self-portrait of the author; the second side is blank; the essay fills the last two sides. Part I and Part II are accompanied by the Cover Leaf to Portfolio I, the first side of which bears the Black Sun imprint, with the date and Caresse Crosby's name; the other sides list the contents and provide brief biographies of the contributors (Henry Miller is listed as an Editorial Advisor). Part I is in excellent condition; Part 2, printed on glossy paper, has picked up some foxing on the cover, also shows some wear and very light staining to top left and lower left corners. A scarce Henry Miller item (each issue of Portfolio was limited to 1000 copies), and rarely encountered in this form. All three pieces protected in a plastic sleeve; very attractive item.
