Home! Sweet Home! by Bishop, Henry R
Graupner, Boston, nd. Very early U.S. printing of the time-honored classic, first heard in England in 1823. Folded folio sheet with music lithographed on first three sides, last side blank. No date given, but circa 1830s. Underneath the title, in various forms of ornate type, is printed: "Sung By Miss M. Trees, in Clari, or The Maid of Milan, at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, Composed & Partly Founded on a Sicilian Air." Henry R. Bishop was the first Englishman to be knighted for his services to music; he composed a huge body of music that is generally held to be worthless today, but his name will live forever thanks to this one melody. The suggestion, in the printed heading, that the melody actually derives from Sicily, is interesting but hardly surprising, considering that many of his works are adaptations, or medleys of well-known airs. Whatever its origins, within a few short decades the song had become so popular that by the time of the Civil War, it served as the favorite song of both the Northern and Southern armies. VG+, with several tiny slits along left border (this item had apparently been bound at some time) and diagonal crease near left border.
