The glue originally holding text leaves in place has disintegrated and the sheets are now loose in portfolios. Hundreds of illustrations including tipped in sepia prints and all 44 full-page colored lithograph plates called for. The portfolios are generally exceptionally clean, sound, and bright, folder 7 has some slight wrinkling on front board. In addition to the color plates, the volumes contain illustrations tipped-in text printed on tissue and laid down. At the front of Volume One is a facsimile letter from General William Sherman to the publisher, George Barrie. A scarce set with attractive color plates. A limited edition, this set is #298.
