First edition.By the early sixteenth century the loosely knit kingdom of Georgia had disintegrated from the strong monarch of the middle ages to a number of small states and principalities. Pp297 with black and white photographs within text and full page sketch map of the Middle East. Lacks dust wrapper. Laid on front pastedown is a card printed "With the Author's Compliments", also, armorial bookplate of Gerald de Gaury. There is some marginalia on pages 66,113, 117 in ink and on back endpaper in pencil, in the hand of de Gaury; commenting on various aspects of the text. Some light marks on the front cover and rust residue from a paperclip on the front free endpapers. Print is strong and binding is tight. Gerald de Gaury, friend of Freya Stark was an experienced traveller, photographer, Arabist and diplomat and perhaps his remarks reflect his view on the situation recorded in this Freya Stark autobiography.

William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
