Arthur H. Clark Company, Glendale, CA, 1959. Assumed First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good +. Arthur H. Clark Company, Glendale, CA, 1959. Assumed First Edition. Very Good +. If you are looking for a good deal on an important gold rush book - - here it is. Robert Kelley's treatment of the hydraulic mining era in California's Sacramento Valley has turned out to be a California classic. This 327-page copy is in all but fine condition with the brown cloth cover showing no signs of wear or defects. The gilt lettering on the spine is still bright and clean and the corners are all but new. The interior follows in fine condition with the deckled edges still as issued. There are no markings or staining at all to the text body. Kelley's description of the controversy and environmental damage brought on by hydraulic mining remains the best source on the subject. Hydraulic mining led to the famous California Supreme Court case in the 1880's that determined that hydraulic mining be regulated and controlled.

[Texas] [San Antonio] Adina De Zavala. History and legends of the Alamo and other missions in and around San Antonio. San Antonio: Standard Printing Co. 1917. Tan pictorial wraps. 20 cm. Illustrated. 219 pp. Rear cover separated; front cover corner bends, else very good.
Adina De Zavala led the opposition to tearing down portions of the Alamo "in a resolute and voluble stand" and was instrumental in the preservation of portions of the original wall of the convent. In fact, she barricaded herself inside the north barrack of the Alamo for three days in February 1908 to protest its destruction. In 1912 she organized the Texas Historical and Landmarks Association, which placed thirty-eight markers at historic sites in Texas. She probably did more than any other one person in stirring interest in the preservation of the Spanish Governor's Palace in San Antonio. – Handbook of Texas. A tireless protector of Texas history, De Zavala is now honored with a marker in the patio of the convent at the Alamo
