First edition of the third volume in the Filosofia come scienza spirito - a massive work outlining a theory of human action by the great Italian philosopher, historian and critic. Although Croce is not well-known in today's academic circles, Croce was perhaps the greatest Italian intellectual of the 20th century, a tireless critic of fascism, whose own interest in communism faded after the realities of Stalin became apparent to him. Following the Second World War, Croce's name was suggested as a candidate for the Presidency of Italy, an honor he would not accept. A few tiny pencil marginalia, otherwise a very good copy in publisher's slightly dusty orange printed wrappers. A presentation copy, inscribed by Croce prior to publication, in late December of 1908. Croce signatures are scarce.
