Light green title in black decorative box on front & light green title in gilt box on spine. PEOPLES EDITION -- very rare!!! It says 'Illustrated' on the front cover, but I saw no illustrations. Previous owner private library plate on front paste down. Previous owner name & date on 2nd ffep dated Mar. 29 '93. Mild corner, edge & spine end rubs & dent. Page edges heavily age tanned. Pages age tanned. Age/shelf soil to front & back & edges of cover. Hinges are intact & the only place that the spine has been cracked is at page 126/127. Decorative end papers. Made into a movie in Sweeden in the 1920's starring Lillian Gish, William Powell & Ronald Coleman. Plot summary from the internet: "In Renaissance Florence, Tito, a no-good young man pretending to be a scholar, wins the admiration of a blind man who has long looked for someone to finish his scholarly work. He has a beautiful daughter named Romola. Tito flirts with a peasant girl in the streets, and for fun goes through a mock marriage with her -- but she takes it seriously. Romola doesn't really love him, but marries him because her father wishes it." This historical novel is not a light read & features Macchiavelli and Savanarola among it characters. 407 pp. Pages are tight & unmarked. Occasional shelf corner crease.
