A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (a bit askew, some age fading to the topstain, some loss to the spine lettering) in a Near Fine example of the scarce dust jacket (light handling soil, a few short closed edge tears), HOUSED IN THE SCARCE ORIGINAL DECORATED BOX (in Very Good condition with some wear and with partial loss to one of the lid's edges). First published in 1901 as "A Family Tradition", an entry in "The House Party An Account of the Stories Told at a Gathering of Famous American Authors the Story Tellers", to which anthology Ford also contributed the Introduction (Small, Maynard & Company, 1901), the book herein described constitutes the first separate printing of the story. The book is enhanced with a frontispiece and four additional full-page illustrations by Harrison Fisher (each with a tissue guard presenting its illustration's title), and every other page, excluding the flyleaves and the versos to the half-title and list of illustrations, carries decorations by Margaret Armstrong who also designed the front board and spine illustrations which remain remarkably bright and unrubbed.
