ABOUT THE ARTIST: With the exception of Degas and Redon, one does not usually associate the pastel medium with the works of major artists. One expects pastels to be used in conjunction with other medium in drawings and not in fully realized compositions that can be compared to paintings for complexity and power. There are, however, some contemporary artists who do produce large scale, ambitious compositions in pastel. Jia-Rhon Chen pushes the medium to reveal unexpected bold color combinations, cubistic forms and depth using a combination of blending and straight application of color, his works are a combination of soft focus, hard focus. Although the works are abstract, they allude to themes, such as architecture and music, both of which utilize repetitive motifs. The artist also works in oils, but, in a sense they are an extension of the pastel aesthetic that he has developed. In addition to being a visual artist, Chen is a neurologist practicing in NY. ABOUT THE EXHIBITION: Featured the artist's work in both oils and pastels. . First Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 11" x 9.5". Exhibition Catalog.
