Book Description
London: Ward, Lock and Tyler. No date (ca 1873). 98pp + ads. "One hundred and twenty-four illustrations of forms and diagrams for manufacture and exhibition." Five folding plates. From the Prefatory Remarks: "The Art of Pyrotechny has, like almost every other art in these days of experiment and research, undergone many processes of change and improvement In fact, that part of the art which relates especially to the preparation of coloured fires may be regarded as entirely new; for not only has the danger which arose from the spontaneously-combustible nature of some of the old compositions for this purpose been obviated and removed, but many new colours have also been introduced (principally by the foreign artists), and the pyrotechnist is thus enabled to produce new combinations and contrasts, which twenty years ago were altogether unknown." Red boards with blind-stamped and gilt design. Generally in excellent condition internally, with only very occasional light foxing and a little grime. All five folding diagrams are present, with some having light edgewear and foxing. Signature comprising pages 67-78 has separated from binding; signature comprising pages 131-142 is still bound in but loose, held on only by binding strings. Text block binding is otherwise quite tight. Half-title and last page of ads yellowed. Endpapers decayed at margin, boards are becoming rather loose (the rear cover more so than the front cover). Prev. owner's ink inscription to front pastedown. Gilt page edges still very bright. Boards with moderate general and edgewear, cloth worn away at corners, but gilt designs to cover and spine are very bright and distinct. Cloth is split for the length of the book at the join between the spine and the rear board.. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
