Book description: Amsterdam, chez la Veuve de Pierre de Coup, 1732. Translation from German. Marbled leather boards. V.g/No Jacket. Two volumes, in matching full leather C18 binding. Bookseller's tickets on end papers (Are. Coccoz) and early C20 owner's bookplates (Charles A. Jensen) on ffeps. Tome 1 contains 10 plates, some folded; tome 2 contains 14 folded plates. The bookplate owner's inscription "Chas. A. Jensen" appears on the recto preceding the title page of each volume. The text paper is somewhat browned and with mild foxing towards the extremities, scarcely affecting the text. The stitching is sound and there is minor shelf wear to the edges and corners of the boards. The plates are in very good condition with no apparent tears or chips. Spines gilt, 5 raised bands, title and volume number inset on red leather. The German scholar Georgius Agricola is best known for his work on mines and minerals, "De re metallica", but he wrote several other learned works including "Neu und nie erhoerter doch in der Natur und Vernunfft wohlgegruendeter Versuch der Universal-Vermehrung aller Baeume, Strauchen und Blumen-Gewaechse" from which the present work was translated. It proposes several novel techniques for propagation of trees by grafting, and an English version was edited for publication by the prolific author Richard Bradley. Vol. 1: (viii), 261 pp. (p. 258 is misprinted 158, text is correct); vol. 2: (iv), 146, (8) pp.
