VG-/G illus by author Viking NY 1936 1st hardcover 8vo, 96 pages, color and b+w illustrations, inscribed and signed. Inscribed and signed by Bemelmans "to Willy /from Ludwig" and dated Oct 20 on title page. This is the author's 2nd book and the first appearance of Madeleine. Red cloth has a abrasion at lower left front and is darkened at upper left corner. Dustjacket worn at spine ends with 1 5/8" chip at base extending 3/8" into rear bottom and 1 1/2" x 1" into left bottom dj front. Chip affects the "Lu" of the author's name. There is a v-shaped chip at the dustjacket top front averaging 3/4" x 3/8" which does not affect titling. Overall a solid, clean copy with dustjacket bright in protective cover.
