The author was a French Army artillery officer and professor who is credited with having made numerous discoveries and innovations in engineering during his lifetime. A practitioner of 'artistic engineering', he was a strong believer in the application of science to engineering problems. The large format volume is divided into six separate books. Books one and two deal with mechanics as they apply to the engineering and construction of foundations, walls, and vaults. Book three covers the properties of materials and their use. Book four deals with the construction of military and civil structures, with sections on the strength and resistance of wood and iron.
