She earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Tufts College and studied Chinese at the University of Chicago Oriental Institute. In 1948 she joined the faculty of Rockford College in Illinois, where she taught Chinese history, English literature and creative writing before retiring in 1960 and moving to Tucson, Arizona, where she died in 2000. She received the 1941 Yale Series of Younger Poets prize for The Metaphysical Sword, and remained an acclaimed poet during the 1940s and 50s." .
