Front wrapper, ii,28pp. Lacking the half title but with the rare printed front wrapper (showing the price of Six Pence) laid down and bound in. Text complete. Top edge of pages have been cut and gilded, the others are untrimmed. Pages a bit marked and rubbed but overall a very good example. The original front wrapper has some small areas of loss to the edges and corners and has been professionally laid down. Bound in modern half red crushed morocco by C. Walters. Spine with raised bands, ruled in blind. Compartments lettered in gilt. Boards with dark red cloth. Burgundy endpapers. Previous owners bookplate (Douglas Peter Crossman, Earl Stonham) on front pastedown endpaper. Overall a very good copy of this uncommon political satire, mocking the supporters of George II and Prince James Stuart, the Old pretender. Not in Halkett & Laing.:

Publishers 1st issue binding of grey cloth, with light green lettering and design of Marble arch, blocked in blue, green and mustard, to the front panel. The spine is lettered in gilt within a green ruled border. Top edge gilt. A little minor rubbing to the extremities and the front inner hinge is cracked but firm. Overall a better than very good copy of this uncommon novel. (Glover and Greene; Victorian Detective Fiction. No. 303). Not in Wolff.

A very good copy in publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering and decorative design on both spine and front board. Pencil signature on blank endpaper and very minor marking to the occasional page. Minor rubbing to the top and tail of the spine and fore-edges. Top edge gilt. Overall a very good copy of this uncommon UK first edition.

Number 18 of two hundred copies, signed by the author, gray paper over cream cloth spine, brown leather title block to spine, 4to, 383 pages. Boards are tanned along extremities, bump to bottom front corner, title block on spine scuffed and chipped, brief gift inscription in front end paper dated 1955, internally clean and soung. John Buchan, or 1st Baron Tweedsmuir (1875 - 1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian and politician who served as Governor General of Canada, and is perhaps best remembered as the author of The 39 Steps. Buchan wrote dozens of books, both fiction and nonfiction.

Light wear, creasing and signs of handling mainly to head and heel of spine otherwise dustwrapper is in very good condition. Colours remain fresh and vibrant with no fading.
