N/A. Presidential Document signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt, dated March 9, 1945. FDR died on April 12, which must make this one of the last such documents he signed. This document is a Postmaster appointment, and as such it is particularly appropriate: FDR was not only the most famous stamp collector of his day, but he was also the only president to be so intimately involved with the Post Office Department. No president before him had ever commissioned his postmaster-general to issue so many new stamps; he also had a hand in designing or suggesting many stamps, including the Susan B. Anthony '36, the Virginia Dare '37 and the Mother's Day '34. The document, which was also signed by the Postmaster General and blind-stamped with the Post Office Department seal, appoints Arthur L. Brown as Postmaster in the town of South Lee, county of Berkshire, state of Massachusetts. According to the auction house where we obtained the item, it had been stored in the basement of that post office for many years before it surfaced recently. The document measures 18" x 14". It is unframed and unmatted. The outer margins are darkened, 1/2" at the widest point; otherwise the document is in excellent shape. Presidential documents by FDR are rare.
