Maurice was born in Birmingham, England, and as a young boy was famous for his female impersonations. His remarkable imitations of Vesta Tilley when he was a teenager caused the Birmingham and other papers to christen him 'The Miniature Vesta Tilley.' In the First World War he joined the Bedfordshire Yeomanry transferring to the Dorsetshire Yeomanry and joining the first battalion in the Syrian campaign.
