New York: Harper & Brothers, 1896. First edition. Wrappers. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the true first publication of this Twain short story, issued prior to the first appearance of the story in book form, in the Publisher's original wrappers; being found in these two sequential issues of "Harper's New Monthly Magazine", being No. 555 dated August, 1896 and No. 556 dated September, 1896, together containing the story's entire eleven chapters. Each issue is in Very Good condition, some chipping and wear to the spine ends and expected handling soil to the wraps. The August issue shows some spotting to the wrappers and some neat pencil marks to the Table of Contents and a tide mark to the lower portion of a number of pages, including those presenting the Twain story. The September issue bears a neat signature and number to the upper front wrapper, a faint tide mark to the pages at and near to the Twain story, and some light damage to the story's page margins. A rather uncommon Twain item, and even more uncommon in the Publisher's original wrappers as offered here. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British.
