Book description: (London?)., , nd, ca. 1840's. VG. 8vo. Single pg. fldg. pen MS lertter of 14 lines, dark brown ink script. Addressed to a W. Atler. Concerns purchasing a coach for a friend & laying out specifications. Reads in part, "A friend of mine wishing a garouche to go out of tour immediately & having seen new ones which he likes the appearance of at Foster's in Picadilly wishes me to get you to examine it yoursef or send a man you can trust to do so. It has to be a reputable maker & can this be done? " He states his friend on a previous occasion did have a carriage for sale looked at by a coach maker but did not want to use his own name feeling it would be insufficient security. Codrington's sig. also on blank reverse. Letter measures 5 1/4 x 7 7/8 in. Clearly readible. The writer, Edward Codrington (1770-1851) was an English admiral, entering British navy in 1783, lieutenant in 1793, commander in 1794, commanded ship at Trafalgar 1805, served in the Scheldt, 1809, and in the Mediterranean 1810-13, became rear admiral 1814, later was Mediterrranean commander in chief, in treaty with Ibrahim Pasha, the Turkish admiral for suspension of hostilities, which were soon resumed by the Greek insurgents in 1827, joined with the French & Russian squadrons in destroying the weak Turkish fleet in 1827, visited St. Petersburg, 1830, retired from active duty 1842.
