An ex-private library copy of the scarce 1940 first printing - the bulk of the publisher's stock being destroyed in an air raid. A partially read copy with several pages still unopened at the fore-edge.

Evidence of library sticker removal to bottom of spine and adjoining boards, careful removal of a two inch square bookplate evident on the rear free endpaper and library stamp erased from the half title but no other signs of library ownership (faint signs of carefully erased bookseller notations on the front free endpaper).

Comprises Preface, Introduction and "Notes On The Materials For The Catalogue Of Gibbon's Library" followed by a lengthy alphabetical listing (pages 43 to 288).

Physical Description: Hardback, 8vo, approx 9 x 6 inches / 23 x 15cm, 288 pages including three reproduction Title Pages plus mono frontis and ten mono plates (including a double page spread).

External Condition:
Moderate general wear to the original black boards and spine (light spine ridge, bump to front board bottom corner), boards firmly attached but front hinge cracked just after the free endpaper with significant glue residue from previous tape repair.

Internal Condition:
Text block sound with no loose pages, top edge black, text block fore and bottom edges untrimmed, internally very clean and clear throughout.

Dust Jacket Condition:
No dust jacket.

First edition.Francisco del Paso y Troncoso, 1842-1916, sixth son in a family of 10 born to Pedro del Paso y Troncoso and Teodora Medina in Veracruz. He was locally educated for a mercantile career, but in 1867 his family sent him to Mexico City to prepare for a future in Medicine. However, through accident and luck, he turned to preparation a history of medicine in Mexico. He laid out an elaborate plan that encompassed examination of Aztec science as a prelude to that in the colonial and national periods. His completed parts of aboriginal botany, astronomy and medicine appeared in the MNA Anales. He never finished his thesis or received a degree. He was appointed Visitor to the National Museum in 1888, and successively was named acting and then permanent director (1889), a post he nominally held until his death. Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

From jacket: "Ruthless, cynical, arrogant, brilliant, supremely dedicated to a rigid concept of duty and vast dream of grandeur, Otto von Bismarck guided Germany to greatness and stood guard over the peace of Europe - while planting seeds of future destruction... What came to be known as the Age of Bismarck was an era of sharp paradox. The man who had based his policy on "blood and iron" now designed a peace that last 40 years."
